Whether you’re considering breast augmentation surgery or you’re loving your results, you might wonder exactly how long Houston breast implants last. This depends on a lot of different factors, but for the most part they’re not considered life-long devices. Most do last a long time, even decades, but it’s likely you’ll outlive your implants. Therefore, at some point you will probably have to get them replaced. Here’s some general information on breast implant lifespan.
How Long Do Breast Implants Last?
Breast implants aren’t like the milk you buy at the grocery store. They don’t come with an expiration date, and how long they last depends on a lot of different factors. While the average implant lasts between 10 and 20 years, some women have them for more or less time. It’s important to remember that breast implants are generally considered safe and have passed lots of tests from the FDA for safety.
It’s a common misconception that the hard rule for breast implant replacement is every 10 years. This number actually comes from the standard warranty for breast implants. Most medical device manufacturers who make implants offer a warranty that if the implant ruptures within the first ten years, they’ll cover some of the costs to replace it. However, warranties vary and this doesn’t mean that your implant will rupture after 10 years.
In fact, the risk for Houston breast implant deflation is about 1% for every year you have it. That means after 10 years, there’s still a 90% likelihood it’ll still be intact. Those are pretty good odds!
Aside from breast enhancement reasons like going for a different size/shape/type, another reason you might get implant replacement surgery is if you experience what’s called capsular contracture. This is where scar tissue hardens around your implants. Once again, this is pretty rare, but it’s another reason women might consider replacing their breast implants.
During your Houston cosmetic surgery consultation, Dr. Piña will talk about how long Houston breast implants last and what to expect after your augmentation procedure personalized to your specific situation.
What are Some Signs to replace Houston Breast Implants?
So, what are the signs that you might need breast implant replacement?
For implant leaks, this depends on the type of implant you have. Saline implants contain sterile salt water, which leaks out pretty quickly. Your body also absorbs saline. Generally, these leaks happen pretty fast and you might notice your breast deflates over hours or days.
On the other hand, silicone implant leaks can be hard to spot. Some women notice their breasts change shape or size or other symptoms, but many don’t notice any signs at all. This is why for silicone implants, the FDA recommends getting regular MRIs. These scans can help detect leaks in the implant.
With capsular contracture, you might notice your implants seem to sit higher than normal, that they’re not as soft as they used to be, or you might even feel tightness around the implants. This can happen with any type of implant, but often we can replace the implant and remove the scar tissue at the same time.
If you believe you need breast implant replacement, give us a call and we’ll help you determine a course of action. In many cases, we can replace the implant with a newer version with little change to the size and shape of your breasts.
