When you think of breast implants, the word “eye-candy” comes to mind. But that doesn’t mean we ever expected an implant to be named after a popular form of candy.
For years, cosmetic surgeons in Houston have offered two types of breast implants: saline and silicone. However, now that’s all about to change, with the advent of a third type of breast implant, known as the “gummy bear” implant.
Basically, this new breast implant could be described “as a silicone implant on steroids.” It’s made of high-strength silicone gel, and therefore holds its shape better than other implants. Furthermore, this implant is safer than the other options because of it has a lower rupture rate. When you put all of this information together, it’s very possible this implant could revolutionize cosmetic surgery just as standard silicone implants did before it. Don’t believe us? Since silicone implants became available 15 years ago, cosmetic procedures in the United States have tripled.
Now you might be curious to learn how this implant got its name. It was coined by a California plastic surgeon, after he noticed that when the implant was cut in half, it was stable and retained its shape, much like a gummy bear.
